Business Inc Futures Lab
Business Incubator is a course centered around design and business. As students of the course we will learn and apply various skills and activities to better understand the business and design process. I took Business Inc because, I wanted to get a better understanding of business properties and what all is involved. My goal is to learn and push myself in ways I haven't pushed before in order to get a deeper understanding of business and a business oriented mindset.
Project kicks was our first big project that laid the ground work for what a simple project should include as well as what it should look like. Throughout this short project I learned a couple of things. I learned that entrepreneurship isn't just about being successful in certain areas. Entrepreneurship is about stepping up and working on something you believe in or want to do and using your failures as fuel for your success. I also learned I can come up with brilliant and creative ideas using design sprint methods. This project connects to the outside world because it is centered around design and marketing, and the steps to this project were modeled around how someone in this career would go about solving a problem like this.
Pop Up Project
The pop up business project is a project where each student is given a budget of 10 dollars to create a business; that either provides a service or sells merchandise. The goal is to make profit and to make that profit after being "open" for a few hours on two days. In terms of entrepreneurial skills I have learned that being flexible and willing to pivot is necessary. I learned that in order for myself to be successful and work well I need to come up with a thought out plan in my head first. I also learned that I need to shrink my big ideas down to things that are a little more reasonable and on a smaller scale. I think this project goes beyond the classroom in a few ways. It teaches students the importance of being resourceful, as well as how to create and market something to an audience of real people.
In this project each of us joined together in groups to make a business idea pitch. Our groups idea was to make a Mexican drive thru that not only sold Mexican food but also sold snacks and goods. I learned a few things about entrepreneurship during this project. I learned that in order to be successful I have to let others take control too. I also learned that if you come up with a solid idea and market it well people will like it. An area of growth during this project would be that I simply loosened my grip on the reigns and went with what my teammate wanted to do even though it wasn't my thing. I think this project connected beyond the classroom in that it showed me that if you put your mind to something you can make something awesome. It also showed me that unexpected things will happen and how important it is to just roll with it and play it off.
Futures Market Project
The futures market project Is where students get to either come up with a business idea or work on their own personal brand for the entirety of the last quarter. Some students chose to pursue a business idea and others chose to strengthen their own personal brand. I chose to strengthen my own personal brand as I have a YouTube channel that I want to get moving again. So I chose to spend my time learning how to improve my YouTube content quality. So far during this project I have learned a couple of things. I learned that entrepreneurship isn't something you are born with or have, entrepreneurship is a mindset. I also learned a couple of things about myself during this project. I learned just how valuable it is to spend my time learning new things, I learned that it can be very easy to get stressed or angry, and finally I learned that I can create great work when I set my mind to it. I think this project connects to real life and not just the classroom because it holds students accountable for how they spend their time and it also allows students to learn more professional real life skills.
